What is DTF printing?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a heat-transfer printing process. Your artwork is printed in reverse with CMYK + white ink onto a clear PET film. While the ink is still wet, hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the back, then the film is cured in an oven so the powder bonds to the ink. The result is a ready-to-press transfer that can be applied to almost any fabric with a heat press. Unlike screen printing, there is no setup, no screens to burn and no minimums — you can press a single transfer or hundreds.

How is DTF different from sublimation, screen printing, HTV and DTG?

Accepted Answer

Sublimation only works on light-colored polyester and prints into the fibers — beautiful for poly fabrics, but useless on cotton or dark garments. Screen printing is unbeatable for very high volume of a single design, but requires a screen, ink and a setup fee per color. HTV (heat transfer vinyl) is fast but limited to flat single-color shapes. DTG prints directly on the garment but is best for 100% cotton and is slow per shirt. DTF prints full-color photo-quality artwork with white ink underbase, so it works on cotton, polyester, blends, fleece, denim, nylon, leather and more — light or dark — with no minimums and a strong, flexible feel.

What is a gang sheet?

A gang sheet is a single DTF transfer film with multiple designs nested together. Instead of paying for one transfer per design, you pay by the sheet length. Pack a 22" x 60" sheet with logos, names, numbers, sleeve hits and pocket prints — then cut the transfers apart at home. It is the cheapest way to get DTF transfers because you stop paying for empty space and per-design setup.

What sheet sizes do you offer?

Our default gang-sheet width is 22 inches. You choose the length: from a 12" sample sheet up to 22" x 240" (a full 20-foot roll). Bulk customers can also order 22" x 480" (40 feet). The longer the sheet, the lower the cost per square inch — see the pricing page for current breaks.

What does a finished DTF transfer feel like on the shirt?

Accepted Answer

Modern DTF feels much softer than old plastisol screen prints or HTV. After pressing, the white ink underbase is hidden under the colors, the carrier film is peeled away, and the finished print has a slight rubbery hand that flexes with the fabric. Pressing again with a Teflon sheet for a few seconds further softens the feel and locks in stretch.

Is DTF safe for kids' clothing and skin contact?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The pigment-based DTF ink and TPU-based hot-melt powder we use are non-toxic and Oeko-Tex compatible after curing. Once the transfer is fully pressed and cooled, it is safe for direct skin contact, including children's wear.

What heat press settings should I use?

Accepted Answer

For our hot-peel film, press at 305°F / 150°C for 10–15 seconds at medium pressure. Peel the film while still hot in one smooth motion, then re-press with a Teflon or parchment cover sheet for 10 seconds to set the print and remove any film texture. Cold-peel transfers press at 280°F / 138°C for 15 seconds — wait until the film is fully cool before peeling.

Can I use a household iron instead of a heat press?

Accepted Answer

A real heat press will always give you a more durable result, but a household iron set to its highest non-steam cotton setting can work in a pinch. Iron firmly for at least 60 seconds in small overlapping zones, applying as much downward pressure as you can. Re-press after the first wash to lock the transfer down. Steam, low heat or short presses are the most common cause of peeling for iron-applied transfers.

What is the difference between hot peel and cold peel?

Accepted Answer

Hot peel transfers are removed from the garment immediately after pressing — fast and ideal for bulk production. Cold peel transfers must cool to room temperature before peeling, but they typically deliver a slightly glossier finish and are more forgiving on tricky fabrics. Both are equally durable when pressed correctly. By default we ship hot-peel film unless you request otherwise.

Do I need a Teflon sheet?

Accepted Answer

Yes — use a Teflon, silicone or parchment cover sheet on the second press to protect the print, soften the hand-feel and prevent your platen from picking up adhesive residue. We recommend re-pressing every transfer for 5–10 seconds with a cover sheet after the film is removed.

My transfer is cracking or peeling at the edges — what went wrong?

Accepted Answer

Almost every adhesion problem comes from one of three things: temperature too low (use a laser thermometer to verify your platen reads 300°F+), pressure too light (you should not be able to easily slide the garment under the platen), or the garment was over-stretched right after pressing while still hot. Always re-press for 5–10 seconds with a cover sheet, and let the print cool fully before stretching the fabric.

What fabrics work with DTF transfers?

DTF transfers are extraordinarily versatile. They press cleanly onto 100% cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, tri-blends, fleece, denim, canvas, twill, nylon (with a lower temperature), leather and even rigid surfaces such as wood and ceramic mugs (with adjusted settings). The only fabric they struggle with is silicone-treated waterproof technical fabric.

Will DTF work on dark or black shirts?

Accepted Answer

Yes — that is one of DTF's biggest advantages over sublimation. Every DTF transfer is printed with a CMYK layer plus a white-ink underbase that masks the garment color, so colors stay vivid and accurate on black, navy, charcoal and any other dark fabric.

Will the transfer melt or shrink polyester or nylon?

Accepted Answer

Polyester can scorch above 320°F and nylon can melt above 270°F. For polyester drop the press temperature to 285°F / 140°C and press 12 seconds. For nylon drop to 260°F / 127°C and press 15 seconds with firm pressure. Always test on a scrap or hidden seam first.

Can I press over seams, zippers and pockets?

Accepted Answer

Use a heat-press pillow or rolled-up towel under the print area to lift it above seams and pockets. This gives even pressure across the design. For chest hits over a placket or zipper, position the design above the obstacle whenever possible.

What file formats and resolution should I upload?

Accepted Answer

Upload PNG files with a transparent background at 300 DPI. PNG preserves transparency cleanly so we can print the white-ink underbase only where the artwork exists. Vector PDFs and SVGs are also great. JPEGs are not recommended because they have no transparency and tend to ship with white or off-white backgrounds.

Do I need to include a white-ink layer?

Accepted Answer

No. Our RIP (raster image processor) automatically generates the white-ink underbase from the alpha channel of your PNG. Just upload a clean PNG with a transparent background — wherever there is color, white ink will be printed underneath, and wherever the file is transparent, no ink prints at all.

What color mode should I use — RGB or CMYK?

Accepted Answer

Upload in sRGB. Our RIP handles the conversion to CMYK + white using ICC profiles tuned for our printer and ink set. If you upload a CMYK file, expect a slight color shift because no monitor displays true CMYK and the conversion has already happened. Soft-proof your colors before exporting if a perfect match is critical.

How big should my design be on a sheet?

Most chest hits are 9–11 inches wide; full-back prints are 11–13 inches wide. Pocket prints are 3.5–4.5 inches wide. Sleeve hits are 2.5–3 inches wide. The Builder shows live measurements as you drag, drop and resize artwork on the sheet.

Can you print very fine lines and small text?

Accepted Answer

Lines should be 1pt (0.35mm) or thicker; text should be 6pt or larger. Anything finer can break up because the white ink underbase requires a minimum line width to register cleanly. We will warn you in the Builder if elements look too thin.

Question 21

How should I wash a DTF-printed garment?

Accepted Answer

Turn the shirt inside out, wash cold (≤ 86°F / 30°C) on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softener and dryer sheets. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron only on the reverse side of the garment, or place a Teflon / parchment sheet over the print before ironing on a low-medium setting.

How long does a DTF print last?

Accepted Answer

With proper care, expect 50+ wash cycles before any visible fade. Industrial-grade DTF inks bond to fabric fibers through the white underbase, so the print stretches and flexes with the shirt instead of cracking off. Our customer test garments routinely show no visible wear after 100 washes.

Can DTF stretch with the fabric without cracking?

Accepted Answer

Yes — modern TPU-based hot-melt powder is highly elastic. The print can stretch up to 30% with the fabric and snap back without cracking. Avoid extreme stretching while the print is still hot from the press.

Question 24

How is gang-sheet pricing calculated?

Accepted Answer

You pay for the sheet length, not the number of designs. A 22" x 60" sheet costs the same whether you fill it with one big design or twenty small ones. Use the Builder's auto-arrange to pack your sheet at 95%+ utilization for the lowest possible per-print cost.

How many designs can I fit on one sheet?

Accepted Answer

It depends on size. A 22" x 60" sheet (1,320 sq inches) typically fits ~30 chest-size logos, ~80 sleeve hits, or 12 full-back prints. Mix-and-match sizes are encouraged — that is exactly what gang sheets are designed for.

Can I mix designs from different customers on the same sheet?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Builder treats every design block independently, so you can press a logo for Customer A, a name for Customer B and a sleeve hit for Customer C from the same gang sheet. Just cut the transfers apart at home with scissors or a craft knife.

Question 27

Do you charge a setup fee or a per-color fee?

Accepted Answer

Never. DTF has no setup, no screens, no per-color charges and no minimums. The price you see in the Builder is the final price.

How fast do you ship?

Accepted Answer

Orders placed before noon Central time ship the same business day. Most US deliveries arrive within 2–4 business days via UPS Ground, USPS Priority or FedEx. Shipping is free on orders over $99.

How should I store unused transfers?

Accepted Answer

Store DTF transfers flat (not rolled) in a cool, dry place between 60–75°F at 30–50% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight. A dresser drawer or document folder is ideal. Properly stored, transfers stay press-ready for at least 12 months.

Can I cancel or modify an order after placing it?

Accepted Answer

If your order has not yet entered production, contact us through the contact form right away and we will pause it for you. Once printing has begun (typically within 1–2 hours of order), the artwork has already been imaged on film and the order cannot be modified.

What if my order arrives with a defect?

Accepted Answer

We re-print or refund any transfer that arrives with a quality defect — no questions, no return required. Just send a photo through the contact form within 30 days of delivery and we will fix it on our next production run.
